  • The ancient kingdom of Zanskar is hiding in the heart of Ladakh. This magnificent valley lives in complete autonomy for about eight months per year because of the uncanny snowfalls blocking the passes. In the middle of the winter, the Zanskar River offers an opportunity that temporarily ends this isolation. The water is freezing because of the cold and an icy avenue in the middle of the mountains is created. The turbulent Zanskar then becomes Chadar, the frozen river. Four to five weeks of travel are possible for the Zanskaris.

After arriving to Delhi we will fly to Leh where the surrounding monasteries and villages will be an excuse to acclimatize. Our first steps on the Chadar will lead us through imposing gorges watched over by the Himalayas. After one week of moving in this unreal world with our Zanskari team of porter, we go up to Lingshet to experience calm, tranquility, serenity, the grandeur of the landscapes, the monastery, the nunnery and praying flags, which will offer us a brief respite.

The horizon will widen on our return to Chadar. We will see some small villages nestled in the heart of this great valley, near Zangla, the ancient capital.

Then we will go back to treading the uncertain ices of Zanskar.

Although this intense trek does not include extreme changes in height (we walk on a river), the altitude is considerable (between 3700m and 4300m), and requires full dedication: the ice of the river can force us to use some difficult passages, where sometimes it will be necessary to use ropes.

This travel doesn’t require any special technical knowledge. However, it requires the traveler to completely let-go and have total confidence in our ability to deal with any situation. But after all, what do you expect? A once in a lifetime opportunity like this does not come easy.
