Day 1: Colombo – Negombo│ Settling Down in Negombo
Touch down at the International airport in Colombo where you will be met by your English speaking driver who will take you one-hour north of Colombo, to the city of Negombo. Depending on your arrival time you may have the chance to explore the city and visit St Mary’s Church, the beautiful pink church in Negombo, as well as walk through the Dutch Canal. Be sure to have an hearty dinner and an early night in preparation for the beginning of your adventure tour through Sri Lanka tomorrow.
Day 2: Negombo – Giriulla │ Cycling and Camping in Wilpattu National Park
After a hearty and healthy breakfast at your hotel, your driver will collect you and take you to Giriulla where you will begin your cycle through the backroads of Padenya. This cycle takes you through villages and past beautiful landscapes that you can stop and admire or sit and talk with the local villagers. After a refuelling lunch you will begin a jeep tour through Wilpattu National Park where you will see leopards, elephants and sloth bears among other animals. Before dinner you will set up camp on the outskirts of the national park where you will spend the night.
Day 3: Giriulla – Anuradhapura│ Exploring Anuradhapura
In the morning after breakfast you will cycle from your campsite to Anuradhapura. This bike ride takes your along dirt tracks, through remote villages and lush, green fauna. Upon arrival in Anuradhapura your driver will meet you and escort you to your hotel. Anuradhapura is the capital city of the North Central Province in Sri Lanka, and its ruins are known as one of South East Asia’s most evocative sights. Visit the archaeological museum and Abhayagiri Dagoba before returning to your hotel for the night.
Day 4: Anuradhapura – Dambulla – Sigiriya │ Dambulla Caves and Sigiriya Sunset Cycle
Your driver will meet you at your hotel after breakfast to begin the two hour drive to Sigiriya through central Sri Lanka. This beautiful journey takes your through greenery and past the Nachchaduwa lake, and onto central Dambulla. Before lunch cycle to the UNESCO World Heritage Cave Temples for lunch and then onwards by bike to Sigiriya. The sunset towards the end of the bike ride will colour the sky beautifully so be sure to enjoy this once in a lifetime experience. Cycle onwards to the hotel where you will spend the night.
Day 5: Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa│Minneriya National Park Jeep Tour
After an early breakfast your driver will take you to Lion Rock in Sigiriya to climb to the Sky Fortress for panoramic views. Take in these most magnificent views before descending to meet your driver who will take you to Polonnaruwa via Minneriya Wildlife National Park for lunch. From you’re your driver will take you to the outskirts of Polonnaruwa to visit the Royal Palace where you can imagine the skyscraper of the day. Your driver will take you to your hotel in central Polonnaruwa where you will spend the night.
Day 6: Polonnarua – Giritale - Kandy │ Trekking Along The Kunckles Trails
Begin early today after breakfast from Polonnaruwa to the Knuckles mountain range. This is a four-hour journey through jungles, villages and back roads, broken up by visiting the small villages of Pallegama and Elahera. Upon arrival at the Knuckles mountain range, enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan lunch before a 3-hour hike along the Knuckles trails. As the sun sets over the mountains, your driver will meet you to take you south to Kandy to your hotel. Enjoy a meal in the city followed by a relaxing night at your hotel.
Day 7: Kandy│ Exploring Kandy
After a good night’s sleep enjoy a fresh breakfast at your hotel before being met by your driver who will take you into central Kandy. Kandy, surrounded by misty hills, is one of the largest cities in Sri Lanka, made up of colourful houses, a beautiful lake and the world famous Temple of The Tooth. Spend the day at leisure exploring this city which once served as the capital of the last Sinhalese Kingdom, which fell to the British in the 1815. Enjoy your day and evening in Kandy before your driver picks you up to return to your hotel for the night.
Day 8: Kandy – Dalhouise │ Climbing Adam’s Peak
After breakfast you will be met by your driver who will transfer you to Dalhouise, a small town in the Nuwara Eliya District. Spend the afternoon exploring the small town and meeting the locals or a visit to the nearby tea estate can be arranged. Eat a traditional Sri Lankan meal for dinner before joining the pilgrims in an ascent of Adam’s Peak at midnight. Take in the beautiful sunrise views at Adam’s Peak before descending and meeting your driver in Dalhouise.
Day 9: Dalhouise – Gingathena│ Rafting Along The River Kwai
After breakfast and tea in Dalhouise your driver will take you the Kelani Ganga, where ‘The Bridge Over The River Kwai’ was filmed. This three-hour drive is a good opportunity to rest and recuperate before rafting the Kelani Ganga. This one-and-a-half-hour raft down the river is appropriate for all levels and passes through beautiful landscapes and greenery. You will stay at a nearby lodge where you can spend the rest of the afternoon or if you feel up for it a trek to a nearby waterfall can be arranged. Enjoy your dinner at your lodge before turning in for the night.
Day 10: Gingathena - Belihuloya│ Off- The-Beaten-Track Camping
Rise early in your rustic lodge for a bonfire breakfast before beginning a 3 hour trek through forests and across rivers to a local nearby village. This traditional village is filled with charm and delicious food so be sure to enjoy a hearty meal here. Your driver will meet you here and take you to Belihuloya via Bogowantalawa and Balangoda. These green towns are home to tea plantations and lush greenery which is not to be missed. Upon arrival in Belihuloya you will reach beautiful waterfalls and lakes where you can swim and explore before setting up camp for the night.
Day 11: Belihuloya – Kinchigune – Hikkaduwa│ Exploring Local Villages by Bike
Wake up early to the sounds of nature to enjoy breakfast cooked on the campfire. Your driver will meet you here to transfer you to Kinchingune where you will begin a 3 hour cycle along quiet roads and small villages. After lunch in the local village your driver will meet you to transfer you to the coastal town of Hikkaduwa. This four-hour drive takes you from the thick greenery of central Sri Lanka to the white sand beaches of the west coast of Sri Lanka. Check in to your hotel in the evening for the night.
Day 12: Hikkaduwa│ Beachside Luxury
Enjoy a leisurely morning and breakfast at your hotel before enjoying some beachside luxury at the coastal town of Hikkaduwa. Hikkaduwa is a bustling place with much to do for the ones that can’t sit still, but the pristine, white sand beaches are perfect for relaxing and recovering. If you would like, scuba diving or snorkeling can be arranged or for the adventure seekers water sports can be organized. Explore the town and local restaurants for lunch and dinner before returning to your hotel for the night.
Day 13: Hikkaduwa│ Discovering Sri Lanka’s Coast
Your second day in Hikkaduwa can be spent visiting the Turtle Hatchery Hikkaduwa where you can help feed the baby turtles, or depending on the time of year, help release the turtles into the ocean. We recommend visiting the Hikkaduwa Harbour which is coloured with the traditional Sri Lankan boats, before enjoying a private tour on water and on Tuk Tuks through the town and surrounding villages. Return to your hotel after dinner to spend your last night in Sri Lanka on tour with Shanti Travel.
Day 14: Hikkaduwa - Colombo│ Departure Day
After breakfast your driver will meet you at your hotel to transfer you to Colombo for your departure flight. Depending on the time of your flight you may have the opportunity to visit the town of Hikkaduwa for any last minute souvenir shopping, or if you prefer you can visit central Colombo before transferring to your hotel for your flight.
