The Grand Expedition of Mongolia

Welcome at the airport and transfer 20km from Ulaanbaatar, near the village of Gatchuurt. A relaxing day in a pleasant setting and a presentation of your trip. Night in a yurt.

Early in the morning, departure for Ulaanbaatar, where you visit Gandantegchinlen Monastery. Then you head north to Amarbayasgalant Monastery, set in an exceptional location. Night in camp.

In the morning, you visit the monastery, then head towards Khuvsgul. The road is magnificent, passing through crops and wheat fields. You reach the town of Erdenet, one of the country's major towns, home to one of the largest open-pit mines in the world. You then head towards the Togoo Uul and Uran volcano reserve, where you make camp.

In the morning you set off for a walk to the summits of the volcanoes, enjoying a spectacular view. Along the way, you pass through Baibulag and its timeless wall, a reminder of the power of the Uyghur dynasty. You make camp near the secret monastery of Ikh Uul, along the Selenge River.

You arrive at the splendid Lake Khuvsgul, set in a lunar landscape, surrounded by green meadows all crowned by peaks on the horizon. You head towards the valleys of Alaga Sar, where you spend the night. Night in a yurt.

You set off with herders and their yaks for a day of hiking in the Alag Sar valleys. You can go on foot or on horseback to discover this flower-strewn land, dotted with edelweiss. Possibility of swimming in the lake. Night in a yurt.

You head towards the village of Khatgal, following the southern shore of the lake. You continue on to Mörön, where you stop to enjoy the local market. You then continue your crossing, going over several passes above 2,000 metres, finally arriving near a magnificent lake, at the heart of Mongolia's lunar landscapes. Night in camp.

A long day on the road to reach the splendid Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, sitting at 2,060 metres altitude. Nicknamed 'the Great White Lake' and located in the Arkhangai region, it's an ideal place to recharge and meditate amid nature. Setting up camp and night in camp.

A day of exploration around the lake and up to Horgo volcano (2,240m). An easy climb to the volcano's summit to admire the spectacular view.

You head south, into a beautiful forested region bordered by the Khangai range to the west. A short stop in Tsetserleg, where you can visit the Zayan Gegeen Museum. Just thirty or so kilometres remain to reach the Tsenkher hot springs, where you can relax at the camp. Night in a yurt.

You leave this little corner of paradise through the steppe and the magnificent Orkhon canyons. Leaving the main track, you arrive near Tovkhon Monastery, which you can reach on foot. From the summit, at around 2,300m altitude, you enjoy a panoramic view over the Khangai range and the magnificent Orkhon Valley. Night with a local family.

A day exploring the Orkhon Valley, with an excursion on horseback or on foot to the spectacular Orkhon Falls, 16 metres high. Return to your hosts for a traditional barbecue. Night with a local family.

You head towards Kharkhorin, the former capital of the Mongol Empire. Visit Erdene Zuu Monastery, an important historical centre of Lamaism in the 16th century, known for its wall of 108 white stupas. On leaving the town, you set up camp near the river. Night in camp.

This is a major driving day, taking you towards the Gobi Desert. You cross the steppe to Saikhan Ovoo, an ideal halfway stop. You can observe the ruins of two monasteries, Barlim Monastery and Khutagt Monastery. Visit the Ongii lamasery and its small museum. Night in a yurt.

This is the last stop before reaching the Great Gobi. Known for its three peaks nicknamed the 'Three Beauties': Baruun Saikhan, 'the Western Beauty'; Dund Saikhan, 'the Central Beauty'; and Zuun Saikhan, 'the Eastern Beauty'. You stop near the Bayanzag Cliffs, nicknamed the 'Flaming Cliffs', tinged with red and ochre, a legendary place once inhabited by dinosaurs. The Natural History Museum in Ulaanbaatar allows you to see some of the bones of these creatures. Night in camp.

You head west to the sand dunes of Khongor Els. These are the most impressive dunes in Mongolia, around 80 metres high and stretching over more than 180km long and 20km wide. From their summit, you can enjoy a spectacular view in an enchanting setting. Evening and night with a local family.

Today, set off exploring the Gobi Desert by camel. The ride takes you along the Khongor River to the foot of the dunes, dotted with saxaul, those famous small shrubs renowned for their valuable wood. Night with a local family.

You take to the road again towards the canyon region. A walk through the Dungdene canyon gorges, where the river turns to ice at Yoliin Am canyon. This is also an ideal place to observe the surrounding wildlife. Night with a local family.

A short transfer to Dalanzadgad for your return flight to Ulaanbaatar. Arrival and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon of sightseeing. Possibility of attending a traditional Mongolian show. Night at the hotel.
