Visa-Free Travel in Indonesia: Who Qualifies and What Everyone Else Needs

Only a short list of countries can enter Indonesia without a visa. If yours isn't on it, the visa on arrival takes a few minutes online. Here's who qualifies, what it costs and what to fill in before you fly.

Visa-free travel in Indonesia: the short answer

Visa-free travel in Indonesia is open to a short list of countries: the ASEAN members, plus Hong Kong, Macau, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Suriname, Türkiye, Kazakhstan and Belarus. Everyone else, including travelers from Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia, needs a visa. For a holiday, that usually means the visa on arrival: IDR 500,000, valid 30 days, extendable once.

Why the confusion? Until June 2023, 169 countries could visit Indonesia visa-free. Then the government suspended the exemption for 159 of them. Plenty of websites still repeat the old list (this page did too, before this update), so if you read "no visa needed" somewhere, check when it was written.

Who can enter Indonesia without a visa?

The current list is short enough to read in one go:

  • ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam
  • Others: Hong Kong, Macau, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Suriname, Türkiye, Kazakhstan and Belarus

The last six on that list were added in Indonesia's most recent update, which tells you something: it changes. Check the official immigration website (imigrasi.go.id) before you book.

If you do qualify, the rules are strict:

  • Duration: 30 days maximum. It can't be extended, and it can't be converted into another visa once you're in the country.
  • Passport: valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.
  • Ticket: a return or onward ticket.
  • Purpose: short visits such as tourism. Working needs a different visa.

Visa on arrival in Indonesia: what most travelers need

If you're French, British, German, American, Canadian or Australian, this is your section. Around 90 nationalities can get Indonesia's visa on arrival, and there are two ways to do it. Same price, same rights:

  1. Online, before you fly (e-VOA). Apply on the official site, evisa.imigrasi.go.id, and keep the approval on your phone.
  2. At the airport, when you land. Pay at the visa counter, then queue for passport control.

The cost is IDR 500,000. You get 30 days, and you can extend once for another 30 days at an immigration office, so 60 days in total.

Our advice: do it online. Picture landing in Denpasar after a night flight, with a queue already forming at the payment counter. With the e-VOA approved, you skip that step.

One warning. Search "Indonesia e-visa" and you'll find lookalike sites that charge more for the same thing. The only official address is evisa.imigrasi.go.id.

Before you fly: a quick checklist

  1. Check your passport. At least 6 months of validity from the day you arrive.
  2. Check your nationality against the visa-free list above. Not on it? Apply for the e-VOA.
  3. Fill in the All Indonesia arrival card within 3 days before arrival, on allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the official "All Indonesia" app. It has been mandatory at every entry point since October 2025 and replaces the separate immigration, customs and health forms. You'll get a QR code to show on arrival.
  4. Going to Bali? There's also a tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per person, separate from the visa. Pay it online on the official Love Bali website (lovebali.baliprov.go.id). More tips in our guide to the must-do discoveries in Bali.
  5. Keep your onward ticket handy. Officers can ask for it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Indonesia with a French, UK or US passport?

Yes. These nationalities aren't on the visa-free list, so you need the visa on arrival, either online beforehand (e-VOA) or at the airport.

Can I extend a visa-free stay in Indonesia?

No. The visa-free stay is 30 days, with no extension and no conversion to another visa.

Is the Bali tourist levy the same as the visa?

No. The IDR 150,000 levy is a separate payment for visitors to Bali, on top of any visa.
