Japan or Thailand: which country should you choose for your trip?

Japan and Thailand offer two very different ways to discover Asia. Japan appeals to travellers with its temples, modern cities, mountain scenery and traditional culture. Thailand attracts visitors with its beaches, fragrant cuisine, lively markets and opportunities to combine nature with relaxation.

Découvrez quelle destination est faite pour vous !

The choice depends above all on your interests, budget and travel dates. Would you like to explore cities, visit temples and discover a culture different from your own? Japan could be an excellent option. Would you prefer to alternate cultural discoveries with swimming and more relaxing days? Thailand is well worth considering. Here are the main factors to help you choose the destination that suits you best.

Budget: Japan or Thailand, which country is cheaper?

Carrousel de photo de Thailande et Japon Budget is often one of the first factors to consider when choosing between the two destinations. Thailand is generally more affordable than Japan, particularly when it comes to meals, activities and certain types of accommodation. In Japan, it is possible to travel at different comfort levels, but accommodation and journeys between regions can account for a significant proportion of your expenses.

How much should you budget for your trip?

Places to visit: Thailand's diversity or Japanese culture?

Que visiter au Japon et en Thailande Both countries have a rich cultural heritage, but sightseeing is not quite the same in each destination. Japan allows you to alternate between major cities, traditional villages, gardens, temples and mountain scenery. In Thailand, Buddhist temples sit alongside markets, former capitals, tropical forests and villages in the north.

What should you visit in Japan?

For a first trip, an itinerary combining Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka offers an introduction to several sides of the country. Tokyo blends lively neighbourhoods, museums, shops and shrines. Kyoto is particularly appealing for its temples, gardens and historic districts, while Osaka stands out for its urban atmosphere and food scene.

My expert tip: take a look at our guides to travelling around Japan for two weeks and three weeks.

What can you discover in Thailand?

In Bangkok, you can visit the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun before exploring the markets and street food scene. In the north, Chiang Mai is an excellent base for discovering temples, local markets and the region's mountainous landscapes. To round off your trip, the former capitals of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai offer a glimpse into the history of the kingdom.

Getting between these regions does, however, require some planning. For a trip of around ten days, it is better to choose two or three stops rather than trying to cover the entire country. You will have more time to enjoy each visit and spend less time travelling.

Beaches and nature: which destination should you choose?

If you want to spend a significant part of your trip at the beach, Thailand is generally the better choice. The country has numerous islands and coastlines suited to relaxing by the sea, snorkelling and beach holidays. Japan also has some beautiful beaches, but they play a less central role in classic travel itineraries.

My expert tip: if swimming is a priority, choose your destination according to the season and the activities you have in mind. For a trip combining beaches, temples and relaxation, Thailand is often easier to plan. Japan is better suited to travellers who prefer varied landscapes and want to include a few days by the sea as part of a cultural itinerary.

Food and travel pace: two different experiences

In Japan, meals range from ramen, sushi and tempura to okonomiyaki and regional specialities. In Thailand, curries, soups, stir-fried noodles and dishes featuring fresh herbs and spices play a major role in the local cuisine.

Where can you eat and how can you discover the local cuisine?

In Japan, small specialist restaurants are often a great way to discover local cuisine without spending too much on every meal. You can also try regional specialities, such as okonomiyaki in Osaka or soba noodles in certain mountainous regions. Markets and food halls in department stores are another way to discover local products.

In Thailand, night markets and street food stalls are particularly good places to sample several dishes in one evening. In Bangkok and Chiang Mai, you will find everything from family-run eateries to more sophisticated restaurants. If you are sensitive to chilli, mention your preference when ordering, as some dishes can be very spicy.

Public transport makes it easy to get around major cities, although itineraries can be quite packed. For families, it is best to alternate temple visits with more playful activities, parks and breaks.

Thailand is a good choice for a trip combining sightseeing, outdoor activities and time to relax. Families can combine Bangkok, a stop in the north and a few days at the beach, provided they limit transfers between destinations. Solo travellers will find a wide range of accommodation and organised excursions, while couples and retirees can opt for a slower pace.

My expert tip: do not choose your destination based solely on the places you want to see. Also consider whether you prefer walking and visiting several sites a day or spending more time relaxing and enjoying outdoor activities.
