An authentic trip to Fukuoka and Kyushu

Just a short walk away, explore the Kyushu National Museum, which immerses you in the region's rich history and culture. Continue your journey by heading up Dazaifu Hill for a spectacular panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. To round off the day, return to Fukuoka and visit Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, a sprawling coastal park perfect for a relaxing stroll along the sea.

This morning, set off to discover Nanzoin Temple, a deeply serene sanctuary nestled in the hills of Sasaguri, east of Fukuoka. Explore the temple, its meticulously manicured gardens, and its Buddhist statues. The tranquility of the grounds, paired with the lush greenery, invites quiet meditation and contemplation. Continue your exploration at the elegant Suizenji Jojuen Park, where a miniature Mount Fuji is reflected in crystal-clear waters. Wander through the lively Shimotori district, ideal for a food break and some shopping. Finally, explore the historic Hosokawa Gyobutei residence, a superb samurai mansion that transports you back to the era of feudal Japan.

Your journey through Kyushu continues with the discovery of Kagoshima, a city of unique charm where history meets spectacular landscapes. Savour the beauty of Sengan-en Garden, a magnificent feudal lord's residence offering breathtaking views over Kagoshima Bay and the majestic Sakurajima volcano. Next, visit the Meiji Restoration Museum, which traces Kagoshima's pivotal role in the modernisation of Japan. End your day taking in the panoramic views over the city from the Shiroyama observation deck, perfect at sunset.

Ibusuki, south of Kagoshima, is famous for its natural hot sand baths, where visitors are buried in volcanic sand. After breakfast, you leave Miyazaki and head to Beppu, a city renowned for its thermal springs. Begin by exploring the "Hells of Beppu", Jigoku, a collection of eight spectacular hot springs, each offering a different colour and texture. Among them, don't miss Umi Jigoku, with its turquoise blue waters, and Chinoike Jigoku, with its glowing red waters. Then visit the traditional public baths, where you can enjoy an authentic onsen experience. Exploring Yufuin, a charming small town nestled at the foot of the mountains, renowned for its hot springs and bucolic charm. Stroll along Yunotsubo Kaido street, lined with artisan shops, cafés and art galleries, the perfect spot to sample delicious local produce. Continue your walk to the mystical Lake Kinrin, often wrapped in a light mist. Take the time to visit the small shrines dotted around the lake and, if you wish, make a detour to the glass museum or the one dedicated to Japanese painting.
