It is, however, the only one to have originated from Iranian peoples, and its language is a modern derivative of theirs. The Russian occupation from 1868 onwards left its mark on the country’s economy and customs, but its Persian culture is still very much alive today. Tajikistan is a land of adventure where authenticity and hospitality go hand in hand. The Culture and Riches of Tajikistan
The Pamir Mountains are often the highlight of a trip to Tajikistan; it is here that the country’s highest peaks are found. Here you will discover unspoilt nature within the Tajik National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll set off to explore the famous Fedchenko Glacier, the longest in the world outside the polar regions, as well as the splendid Sarez and Karakul Lakes with their magnificent blue waters. The country is also home to the Fan Mountains and Lake Alauddin, and to reach them, you’ll travel along roads through a lunar landscape. Don’t miss the Sarazm archaeological site, dating back to the 4th millennium BC. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can see exceptionally well-preserved traces of past civilisations there.
